Russia In Winter

Russia in winter...Let me guess - snow, more snow, a couple of bearded guys with Kalashnikov, vodka and bears, right?

Curse you, Hollywood!

In reality, we haven't had cold winters for the several years, especially in Moscow. I mean, they CAN be frosty for a week or so, but that's pretty much it. Yep, sorry to disappoint!

If you want a true fairytale - get out of Moscow, somewhere to "Podmoskov'e" (Moscow region). That's where Russian winter resides these days! Snowy plains, quiet, frozen forests - you name it!

My personal favorite is the region of "Volokolamskoye" highway - there's a great forest right next to "Anikeevka" train station, very popular with skiers. Just don't get lost!

But is the lack of frost a bad thing? I wouldn't say so! If you came to see Moscow, and it's -25C, well.... you probably won't be seeing that much, right? Also, imagine how great it'll look when you will be telling your friends that "in fact, Russia is not THAT cold". You'll surely win their respect!

Poor thing!

OK, so you're dying to see Russia in winter, you've bought the tickets and you are about to pack your things. What should you take?

I'd say you have to be ready for two weather conditions - near zero temperature and -15 to -25C frosts that can hit anytime. Of course, you can take clothes that'll make you warm even on top of Himalayas, but I suggest you leave some space for "lighter" things, like warm jacket and reinforced jeans.

Let's be real - chances that cold period will last your entire stay are next to none, and when it gets back to, say, -2, you'll be really sweating!

Don't forget to take a shoe brush - when it's warm and the snow's melting - Moscow can get really dirty. Not too good for your boots, and doesn't look very nice, either!

You don't have to brush these for sure!

Getting a flu shot is a good idea. Warm winter is ideal for infections - this is the time when most people get sick. Don't let the virus ruin your trip, but make sure you're vaccinated against Russian flu - there are many strains of this virus, you know.

Although summer is a better time for a visit, there're many things you can do in Moscow during even when it's cold. Moscow sights are still there, waiting for you. They aren't closed for winter!

So you won't see the flowers! Big deal! How about a huge skating rink right on the Red Square? It usually opens right before the New Year, so plan in advance. This miracle will stun you for sure!

Kremlin is great this time of year. Can you see how the snow adds magic to the place? Two symbols of Russia coming together? Trust me, it's just not that in the summer!

You've had a long day, you're tired and frozen...how good it is to have a hot meal in Moscow restaurant, take a hot shower, and see what you've pictured during the day.

Sleep well!
