Islamic Terrorism in Moscow

Islamic terrorism is a pain for everyone these days. Moscow is no exception.

Thanks to Caucasus war, the worst Muscovite's nightmare is a woman in black carrying two heavy bags.

There's no way you can change things, but you can take precautions. Knowledge is power, and in this case - knowledge is life.

First thing you should know is that the threat is very low. Chances of you being blown sky-high are next to none. Chechen campaign is over, and terrorist attacks are a thing of the past.

Still, the risk DOES exist, and that's why we should take precautions. What are they? It's quite simple - stay away from the crowd. It's a likely target for terrorists and a threat by itself.

You should:

1) Avoid mass performances. Think twice before going to a crowded rock concert - the fans may get excited, and someone may end up injured.

2) Stay home during rush hour. Going out anywhere further than the walking distance will be a waste of time. You'll be either stuck in a traffic jam or pressed against the window in the metro. In any case, this is not fun. Moscow public transport can make you squeal!

3) Watch out for suspicious people. It doesn't have to be a bearded man, you know. Can be a pretty girl with a make-up. Pay attention to anyone who acts weird. If you're too shy to call the police - just change the train. You'll be late for 5 minutes, but who knows what you might gain?

4) Have someone to call. If something happens - call your friends immediately. The least they can do is phone the cops and explain what happened in case your Russian isn't that good.

5) Keep the important data with you. Your blood type, travel insurance, your friends contacts - anything that may help the doctors and the police. Just beware of pickpockets.

Like I said, the crowd is your worst enemy. If the bombing takes place - you'll be run over in no time. Even slight panic is enough, you know.

Be smart, plan your trips, avoid large masses of people - and you'll be fine. I'm living in Moscow for many years, and I'm not afraid at all.

Neither should you!

Update: On March, 29th, dozens of people were killed and injured in deadly suicide Moscow bombings. Our prayers are with them.
